The Topanga Animal Rescue News Feed (updated as often as possible)

Our focus is always the health and safety of the animals–but sometimes when more than one of us is at a rescue or event, we do get a chance to film or take a few pictures. We then share them here and on the blog. For every post here, or on our video page or blog, there are many, many rescues for which we have no media.

Never a dull moment…

Susan Clark with Firemen

Volunteer, Susan Clark working with Local LA County firemen at the site of a house fire. Topanga Animal Rescue administered oxygen to the smoke inhalation impacted pups and transported them to a vet hospital. The owner, suffering from the effects of the fire as well as cancer, lost everything in the fire. Topanga Animal Rescue pledged to the hospital to cover the bills so she could get her loving pooches back.

A funny thing happened on the way to the bees

We received a call about a baby great horned owl, blown out of its nest by the high winds.  We stopped on our way and looked it over — it seemed basically healthy but the nest appeared to be at least 60 feet up in a huge pine and this owl was still in its soft baby down–not a fledgeling. It was in  a very dangerous position, an exposed driveway , working closely with Fish and Wildlife,  BABY OWL 1we transported it to rehab.

Saving the Bees in Calabasas.

Bees are in a very bad way these days and without them so are we.  This colony was moving and had parked itself in a busy motel parking lot. Threatened by a potential visit from an exterminator, we snipped these bees out of the bushes and removed the entire mass to a hive box, then transported it to a new and safer home where they are already thriving.  Bees in transit are generally docile–but don’t try this at home– especially not with an active hive.  Just give us a call.  We love bees.

Susan Clark and Ken Mazur of Topanga Animal Rescue received an award at a National Park Service event in Agoura Hills, CA,  for their 25 years of rescue work and their long standing commitment to issues relating to the preservation of the Santa Monica Mountains natural environment and the health of and respect for animals in general.

Topanga Animal Rescue rescued and placed this swan in a beautiful, sheltered water environment some years ago.  Recently the property managers decided that they no longer wanted her there so we collected her and found her a fantastic natural habitat home in Northern CA. She is there now.  Below, volunteers, Jamie and Kaira bring out the cage for transport.

Domestic Dog and Cats…..

Over population is the biggest cause of homelessness for dogs and cats in America.

Too many animals, not enough homes that can adopt them.

A dog or cat’s life is terminated in a U.S. shelter every 8 seconds!

11,000 shelter dogs and cats die EVERY single day.

Tragically, most of these deaths could be prevented with education and more facilities for the spaying and neutering of pets.

We urge you to spay and neuter your pets and encourage others to do so as well.

Fight  to end this ongoing crisis.
